First of all, how much experience do you have with horses, how old is this horse, and how well-trained is it? I wouldn't buy any horse until I had ridden it a lot. Second, there is a lot of expense with owning any horse (boarding, shoeing, vet bills, etc.) A decent horse will run 3,000 to 15,000; tack 1500 to 3000; ongoing board 250 to 500 per month; shoeing 100 to 150 every six weeks; vet bills 200 plus per year. So make sure you are ready for this responsibility.
Most of all make sure the horse you buy is right for you so you aren't afraid to get on and really ride 4 to 5 times a week. If you aren't certain, try and lease a horse for awhile to get to know it and make sure you are committed. This probably isn't what you want to hear, but I sincerely want you to to have a good experience so that your passion for horses continues. It is very hard to unload a horse that doesn't work out or that you find you can't afford. That isn't right for you or the horse.

Read everything you can get your hands on about horses (free on the internet and public library). Save your money and invest in Chris Cox's volume 1 and 2 training dvds.
Practice, practice, practice. Ride, ride, ride. Have fun!

$404.99, a lot of money but I have learned so much from watching these dvds over and over and then going out and practicing for hours and hours. If you cant afford both, just start with vol 1. Also, his book is really worth having. You can order all of these from his website. It takes more time than most imagine for you and the horse to learn, but it does come with patience.

I am so excited for you and your new passion. Everyday you spend with a horse, I promise you, they will teach you something. You will never learn it all but you will die trying. The more you study the better you will get and altho your riding lessons are very important what you do with your new horse on the ground will be the most important. This will build the life long relationship we horse crazy people crave. AND all that ground work will be the start of your skill and relationship on his back. Know one says or shows that to us more than Chris Cox so you go girl and don't be in a hurry, it's a wonderful life long journey . Happy trails and be safe. Cathie 1  out of 1 found this valuable. thank you, i do love it, and hope with all my heart that i can pursue the horse world. it is one of the few things that i could do all the time. it never gets old, and i always love it, especially when i have a harder horse to work with, its just more of a challenge. i would like to be a horse trainer, and i guess the first thing that i would need is a horse, i have enough money to buy a decent horse, but my parents wont let me, they want me to save for a car, i told them that i would rather ride my own horse, than have a car, but they just doont get it. hopefully they will come around, but for now, i guess i will just have to keep learning all that i can, and train the horses that i do get to ride. if anyone is ever in mammoth lakes, or near, and needs there horse trained, im your girl!!! There are cheap horses out there. Also buyer beware or habits disease. There are also people out there with horses that they dont use and would be happy to send their old friend to a good home. With a scary economy there are good horses out there. I picked up a 13 yr mare at Christmas for $50 and rescued her from a dinnerplate fate. I am experienced with horses however. The first horses I got when I was 30 yrs ago was a pair of stablemate mares 1 was broke and the other was not. We broke out the 2nd mare using the monkey see monkey doo method. She would do anything as long as she could be with her stable mate. I rode the pony and my brother rode the unbroke mare, we were fairly inexperienced with horses. My brother and I broke them. Our parents who had experience with horses as youth, did not help us much. Older unbroke horses dont tend to be as silly as youngsters. Years later I picked up a yearling from a baby factory. Some people might like the charitable deduction as a 4-H project. Ask a stable for assistance in finding one. Maybe they have one that no longer fits their needs. Do you find this valuable?

LAZY S,

Where do you get your horse prices from?!! And what kind of horses are you referring to? There are cheap horses out there. They are no show horse nor are they the breeds best representatives. But they can be a wonderful friend and a great place to start.

Horses are expensive but much cheaper than other things that teenagers can get into- Drugs, & sex. There is a nice story called becuase My Daughter Grew up With Horses, The story highlights life skills that are hard to come by. Maybe your parents will get the horse bug.

Google "california horse rescue" and you will find a number of agencys that have unwanted animals. We have a rescue horse that is an absolute gem. If you have the time, a rescued horse can be inexpensive and heartwarming at the same time, but I will give you several pieces of advice.

1. Take someone with you that knows horses really well.
2. Don't pick a rescued horse (or any horse) based on color and symmetry.
3. Don't settle on one horse right away. We adopted a horse after visiting him five times over two months and only after a trainer friend saw him and got on him.
4. Be prepared to have an adopted horse put in for at least 30 days of training, especially if you are a beginner.
5. Don't let someone tell you that a beginner should have an old horse, our boy is five and is absolutely wonderful and calm, he just didn't know much when we got him.

Rescuing any animal is a game of chance, but if you take your time, you can end up with a really nice companion that otherwise wouldn't have a home. Many rescue organizations are non-profit, so your money goes directly to help the animals. Many rescue organizations offer therapeutic riding for those with physical and emotional challenges and offer opportunites to children who are not as fortunate when it comes to affording a horse. Rescue is a great cause, but requires lots of patience and time to find the right fit for you. Good luck, I hope this helps.
