I went and watched a Clinton Anderson clinic this weekend and really enjoyed myself, but I found myself anxious to get home and do everything exactly the way HE did in the clinic!!! It didn't exactly happen that way, to say the least. After all, it looked so easy--one, two, three, four! Voila! Your horse looks at you and becomes soft instantaneously! Not so much.
I had to thank Chris for reminding us that our training is not in our tools (which I was suckered into buying at this clinic), and to be patient with ourselves and our horse. I am not coordinated or strong enough to master the carrot stick while I'm lunging her, but I was just as successful with the end of the lunge line before. I was so disappointed with my session tonight, but I hopped on line and lo, and behold! Here's this uplifting article that gave me a different light on things, and to appreciate the things that did go right. (Tonight, for the first time, I tied my horse up after our lesson to let her soak things in for about an hour. It was all the time she seemed to need to begin relaxing.) So, I'm back to looking forward to tomorrow now, thanks to the CC Horsemanship Website! Thank you again!

Congratulations!!! It must have been amazing to see her begin relaxing. For me at least, if I take it one day at a time and one accomplishment at a time instead of overloading my horse's brain with too many tools and too many exercises to master at once things turn out just fine. Of course, some horses take longer than others, but in the end the goal is usually accomplished. You hit the nail right on the head when you said to be patient with ourselves and our horses. That is the key IMHO. I wish you and your mare the best of luck in her continued training.
