The Bureau of Land Management alleges that the mustang population is detrimental to the ranges in Nevada; however, they number of horses they have rounded up compared to the number of cattle that have been allowed to graze on the same public lands have increased in numbers.
BLM has not done a good job at keeping the horse populations in a healthy balance in any state that they are managed. They have used questionable practices in using pig hormones in mares to reduce pregnancy rates.
Here are some of my solutions:
1. Gather a group of breeders well-known for their expertise as well as equine veterinarians and allow them to select colts and young stallions in order to cull the herds by gelding them.
2. Create bachelor herds in remote locations to use for potential breeding prospects with mare bands for future breeding programs when herd populations start to dwindle.
3. Offer ranchers "incentives" to allow horses to graze and drink from their properties.
4. Offer professional trainer "incentives" to adopt these horses for training and reselling to potential owners. BLM auctions are not well-funded or staffed to follow-up on new owners, many of them do not have any expertise in handling a horse let alone a wild horse and end up being abused even further.
Together we can offer common sense solutions to this problem..those horses need our help.

Every time I see something about the mustangs,I cry.How could anyone run them off cliffs to die?In this world I am considered as a disabled person.I can't find anything on BLM website that helps people.Looks to me like they are doing what they did a long time ago to our Native Indians.I live in Indiana and desperately need to get out of here.I don't know how.Disability only pays a bit over $500 a month. It looks to me that someone out there wants to kill horses and people that are not "perfect".It is freezing here and I have been trying to find a way to move to TX.I've been in touch with Spirit Horse Therapy-they tell me land costs $70,000 where they are.I can't do that.My intention is to grow hay for horses that really need it.Mine fall in that catagory, too, because the gov told the farmers not to make a second cut on the hay.I know what the problem is and me and my 3 horses are ready to pack up and get out of here. Can't do it-no car,and can't rent an enclosed hauler to move them. The wind storms came through here and tore out all our outbuildings. The gov for the state paid some people a lot of money. Not me.I don't own a business or forrest.I got a food card for $300.I need a philanthropist.Anyone got any ideas? It is 3 degrees F,icestorm.Help,please.
